Why these obstacles in the most sought after Lakshadweep Tourism?

The number of tourists visiting the Lakshadweep through the ship packages of SPORTS, the body authorized to and responsible for conducting such tour packages, is always on the increase. But the SPORTS is not able to provide adequate travel facilities to the tourists. The last minute cancellation of ships, denial of berths etc., are causing untold miseries to the tourists who reach the office of SPORTS at Kochi with great enthusiasm to begin their exotic tour to enjoy the scenic beauties of Lakshadweep islands.

The reasons put forward by SPORTS are not at all convincing. They have only one answer: ‘sufficient number of berths are not available’. Technically this may be correct. But an intending visitor cannot be satisfied with this evading explanation of SPORTS. Naturally, he or she will wonder: ‘Who is actually responsible for this phenomenon’?

Things cannot be left to the whims and fancies of the executive body. If any corrupt official is responsible for this state of affairs, the law should come heavily on them, to save the cause of Lakshadweep Tourism.

Yet another serious problem ruining the Lakshadweep tourism is non-availability of adequate rooms due to closure of prominent resorts viz., Bangaram and Seashells. The Agatti Island Beach Resort is there, in a limping state, almost in the verge of closure. When these resorts were ordered to be closed, the officials concerned appeared to be unconcerned of the difficulties of the intending tourists, the loss of income to the UTL and about the fall in the degree of welfare measures to the islanders.

There is great potential for tourism in the Lakshadweep Islands. Information available through websites keep on attracting more and more tourists to this exotic tourist destination – The Lakshadweep.

It is not known as to why the authorities concerned, ranking from the top to the executing force down below are unable to catch the wind. The revenue loss due to closure of Lakshadwep resorts are quite sizeable and cannot ever be regained. Such revenue, if well derived, could have been easily recycled for islanders’ welfare.

‘Absurd’ is not a very parliamentary word. But when our heart aches for the poorer segment of the society, who, unfortunately are destined to live in a deplorable condition, we are forced to say ‘the whole episode of closing down the island resort is absurd, if not ugly’.

Decades ago, intelligent elderly people used to ‘clean their grains when the wind was favourable’. It is still unknown as to who will emerge to drive wisdom to the sleeping authorities.
