Kiltan Island
KILTAN island is one of the inhabited islands in Lakshadweep, at a distance of 394 kms away from Kochi. It is located between 11° 28' and 11° 30' N latitude and 72° 59' and 73° 01' E longitude. Kiltan lies 51 kms north-east of AMINI on the international trade route between the persian Gulf and Sri Lanka and 37 km to the southeast of Chetlat Island. The reef and lagoon are located to the west of the island and the total length of the dry land area is 3.2 km and 0.6 km width at the broadest point. The total area of island 2.20 sq km.
The island is thick in flora and is fertile. On the northern and southern ends of the island there is a high storm beach. Land development of the island has been identified as the third important sector and this would potentially facilitate the beautification of the island in general and make the island more livable especially for the tourists.Local economy of the island consists of agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries. In agriculture coconut is the dominating crop like in other islands.
Kiltan's local self government is divided in to 8 different electoral wards. The literacy rate of Lakshadweep comes to 86.66. The literacy rate of Kiltan Island is 81.67 as per the 2001 census data. According to the latest population estimates of the Kiltan population comes to 4184. Out of these 2111 are males and 2073 are female.
